Originally from the East coast, Billy Katz has been a Los Angeles-based musician for more than twenty years. He has performed in countless bands, in addition to writing, recording, and teaching music. Throughout the course of his career, Billy has worked with award-winning producers such as Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, The Shins, etc.) and Kevin Moloney (U2, Sinead O'Connor), among several others. He's toured the United States twice, and majored in music at USC's esteemed Performance Guitar program, repeatedly earning Dean's List credentials during his tenure there.
In 2007, Billy was hired to play acoustic and classical guitars for the score of the film "Juno". His distinctive riffs can be heard on several cues throughout the movie, from the opening scene to the closing credits. The standout track "Up the Spout", performed by Billy on acoustic guitar, can be found on the Grammy-winning Juno soundtrack. He's credited as Special Guest several times on the album's double-disc re-release.
Billy married his wife Megan, an accomplished musician herself, in 2006. Their daughter Eleanor was born in January 2010, and already has a true appreciation of music, and a natural inclination for performing.
Billy recently completed courses on mixing and composition through Berklee School of Music's online program. These days, he's focusing his efforts on music placements; his material has already generated positive interest from supervisors and music houses. Tess Taylor, President, National Association of Record Industry Professionals, says:
"Billy Katz's instrumentals are spicy, fun, full of movement and ready to license. He's a fast, capable and talented composer."
